Durban’s west is set for a major economic transformation with the launch of the Westown Smart City, a R15 billion development in Shongweni. The first phase, featuring the landmark Westown Square Mall, will officially open on March 27, 2025.

Dubbed the “Midrand of KwaZulu-Natal”, Westown aims to become a strategic economic hub along the N3 corridor between Durban and Pietermaritzburg, driving investment, job creation, and urban expansion in the region.

A Game-Changer for Durban’s Economy

Developed by Fundamentum Property Group, Westown is set to create over 23,000 jobs and attract significant private and public investment over the next 10 to 15 years.

Key highlights include:

  • Westown Square Mall: A 50,000 sqm retail and lifestyle destination

  • The Barn: A high-street market experience featuring artisanal homeware, beauty, fashion, and food

  • Shongweni Eco-Park: A R2 billion residential project by Balwin Properties, featuring 1,260 apartments and luxury amenities

  • Farrier Business Park: A prime hub for warehousing and logistics

  • Parc Ferme: A motor-focused commercial zone

  • Infrastructure Boost: The eThekwini Municipality is investing R600 million in roads, water, electricity, and wastewater infrastructure

Westown Square: More Than Just a Mall

Unlike traditional malls, Westown Square is designed as a multifaceted lifestyle destination, blending retail, dining, and event spaces.

At the heart of the development is The Barn, offering an immersive market-style shopping experience, featuring local artisans, fashion designers, and lifestyle brands.

With the first phase opening this March, future developments will roll out over the next decade, reinforcing Durban’s position as a key investment hub.

Westown is expected to attract businesses, homeowners, and tourists, solidifying its status as one of South Africa’s most ambitious smart city projects.
