Northcliff Faces Water Outage: A Day-by-Day Account from Local Residents

For the past three days, Pauline Michell, a 71-year-old Northcliff resident, has faced daily challenges due to a water outage that began on Sunday afternoon. Living alone, she relies on five-litre water bottles, but now with only one left, she fears she won’t last much longer if the water isn’t restored soon.

“I’m 71 and not mobile,” said Michell, visibly frustrated. “I can’t go out to get more water, and now I’m sitting here with none and no way to get any. Something has to be done.” She has resorted to using her swimming pool water to flush the toilets but is uncertain how she will manage if the situation persists.

For Jolandi Kuhn, living in a household of six, the lack of water has forced her to make daily trips to her mother’s home in Florida for bathing. “My mom has borehole water, so we’re relying on her,” Kuhn said. She’s using her pool to flush toilets but expressed concern for those without such resources. “I don’t know how others are managing, especially those who can’t drive for water.”

Angelique Butler, another Northcliff resident, shared her frustration as well. She’s been without water since Sunday and criticized Johannesburg Water for offering no real updates. “We’ve heard that a team is working on it, but that’s it. No time frames, no meaningful answers.”

Butler also recalled a similar experience in December when a lengthy outage occurred due to infrastructure upgrades. “Now we’re dealing with water cuts at night or early mornings with no warning, and our bills keep coming in as usual,” she said. “It’s frustrating to see water wasted on burst pipes while we have dry taps.”

Ward councillor Nicolene Jonker confirmed the major pipe burst on Sunday and explained that Johannesburg Water was working hard to address the issues, despite challenges with old infrastructure. “It could be a faulty valve or a motor issue,” Jonker speculated. “Our team is working tirelessly to fix the problem.”

Johannesburg Water confirmed that repairs were underway and that a minor pipe burst was discovered on the outlet side of the pump station. While the pump is now functioning, the water hasn’t yet reached the Northcliff water tower. “We’re still investigating the cause, but our teams are on-site, and alternative water supply points have been set up,” a Johannesburg Water spokesperson said.
