Who Will Win Ward 110? High-Stakes Battle Shakes eThekwini

A high-stakes by-election is unfolding in eThekwini’s Ward 110, with the Democratic Alliance (DA) pulling out all the stops to keep hold of the area amid growing challenges from six rival candidates, including a resurgent MK Party.
The DA has dispatched senior party figures to bolster its campaign, including federal leader John Steenhuisen, provincial leader Francois Rodgers, and KZN chairperson Dean Macpherson. Their message is clear: keeping Ward 110 in DA hands is critical, especially with MK closing in after narrowing the gap to just 680 votes in the national election.
“Our momentum is strong, and every vote matters to prevent the MK Party from winning its first eThekwini seat,” said DA provincial communications coordinator, Nqobile Nhleko.
Tight race draws major political players
Ward 110, which covers Sunningdale, Glen Anil, and Glen Hills, became vacant after the DA terminated the membership of former councillor Aamir Abdul in January. Seven candidates are now in the running, including an independent and representatives from the ANC, EFF, MK Party, NFP, and the 1860NIC Congress.
Macpherson warned that votes split between smaller parties could hand the ward to the MK Party. “Any support for independents or minor parties increases the chances of MK winning the ward,” he said.
The ANC, once dominant in the ward, is confident that its campaign has reignited local support. “We might have lost touch before, but we’ve run a strong campaign with a well-known candidate,” said ANC regional spokesperson Mlondi Mkhize.
The EFF, meanwhile, is using the by-election to reinforce its visibility during a rebuilding phase. “Contesting keeps us in the public eye as we reorganise the party,” said EFF leader Mongezi Twala.
Although the MK Party did not comment ahead of voting, its recent victory in Ward 28 in the KwaDukuza Municipality has made other parties take note. The party’s growing support signals a potential power shift in the region.
Today’s by-election will be closely watched as over 18,000 registered voters across five districts decide who will lead Ward 110. The outcome could signal broader political shifts in eThekwini ahead of the 2026 local government elections.
