Business Owners Near Vaal River Reeling from Flood Damage

Published

Businesses along the banks of the Vaal River are reeling after recent flooding disrupted operations and scared away potential guests, particularly over the busy Easter weekend.

The Department of Water and Sanitation confirmed on Thursday that two additional sluice gates at the Vaal Dam would be opened to manage the overflow, with the dam sitting at 111% capacity. The department had earlier advised residents along the riverbanks to evacuate due to the rising water levels.

With flood warnings still in effect, operators say the lack of clarity in public alerts makes it nearly impossible to plan or stay afloat. A local resort owner described how weather concerns and vague warnings about the river have significantly reduced bookings and foot traffic.

“What we’ve experienced with the floods and the warnings for the Vaal River – they’re not specific at all. It’s extremely difficult for those of us running businesses to continue under these conditions,” said the resort owner.

The South African Weather Service has also issued further flood alerts for parts of Gauteng, warning that more areas could be affected if heavy rains persist.

As recovery remains uncertain, business owners along the Vaal are calling for clearer communication from authorities and support to help them cope with the ongoing impact.
