Safety First: Residents Told to Stay Clear as Vaal River Flood Risk Remains

The Department of Water and Sanitation is calling on communities near the Vaal River to remain evacuated, as flood risks remain high following the opening of more sluice gates. Authorities warn that water levels are not expected to drop anytime soon.
Over the weekend, officials opened additional sluice gates at both the Vaal and Bloemhof dams to manage the overflow caused by recent heavy rainfall. These controlled releases have led to persistent flooding along the riverbanks.
The department says communities downstream of the dams are at continued risk and should avoid returning to flooded areas until it is safe to do so. Department spokesperson Wisane Mavasa said people who have already evacuated should not attempt to re-enter affected zones.
“Residents living within the floodline of the Vaal River, downstream of the Vaal and Bloemhof dams, should stay clear of the flooded areas for their safety,” she said.
Heavy rains in recent weeks have pushed dam levels higher than usual, prompting authorities to take emergency measures to prevent further damage. The department confirmed that more gates may be opened if rainfall continues.
Emergency services remain on standby to assist affected families, while local municipalities are monitoring water levels and issuing alerts.
