US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has denounced the controversial “Kill the Boer” chant, calling it a dangerous incitement to violence that threatens South Africa’s minority groups.

In a statement shared on social media, Rubio urged South African leaders to act against rhetoric that could endanger vulnerable communities. He warned that the chant, often used in political gatherings, fuels hostility toward Afrikaners and other marginalized groups.

“‘Kill the Boer’ is a chant that incites violence. South Africa’s leaders must act to protect Afrikaners and other disfavored minorities,” Rubio stated on X.

He also confirmed that the United States is prepared to offer asylum to those facing threats, reaffirming America’s commitment to human rights and safety.

Rubio’s remarks come after EFF leader Julius Malema led a crowd in chanting “Kill the Boer” during a Human Rights Day event, sparking international controversy.

US President Donald Trump also weighed in, amplifying concerns about the chant and South Africa’s land policies. Sharing Elon Musk’s tweet on his Truth Social platform, Trump echoed warnings about what he called “white genocide” in South Africa.

Musk, in his post, criticized global media for ignoring the issue and accused South Africa of racial discrimination, citing his company Starlink’s inability to obtain a local license.

The controversy is further fueled by South Africa’s Expropriation Act, signed by President Cyril Ramaphosa in January 2025, which allows land expropriation without compensation in certain cases. While proponents argue it addresses historic injustices, critics warn of economic risks and property rights violations.
