A first-year University of Johannesburg (UJ) student is recovering after being struck by a stray bullet during a violent shooting at the Enkomeni taxi rank near the university’s Doornfontein Campus.

According to police, gunshots rang out at the Jeppe-based taxi rank on Thursday, leaving four people dead and three others, including the student, wounded. The injured were rushed to the hospital, with the student later discharged.

UJ spokesperson Herman Esterhuizen confirmed the university was aware of the incident and had offered support, including counselling services. The institution is also reviewing security measures to protect students both on and off-campus.

Sizwe Taxi Association chairperson Velanto Thwala expressed shock, saying there were no known conflicts involving his association. He condemned the attack, apologizing to commuters and the families of the deceased.

Security has been heightened at the rank while authorities investigate the shooting. The Jeppe Police Station commander has also been engaged to prevent further violence.
