Uber Launches Motorbike Rides in Johannesburg to Ease Traffic Congestion

Published

on

Uber has introduced Uber Moto, a new motorbike ride-hailing service in Johannesburg, as part of a pilot programme aimed at providing faster, more affordable transport options.

What Is Uber Moto?

Uber Moto allows passengers to book motorbike rides in parts of Johannesburg’s western CBD, offering a cost-effective and time-efficient alternative to traditional cars.

  • Starting fare: R18
  • Passenger limit: One per ride
  • Safety measures: Helmets provided, full safety features enabled
  • Cost: About half the price of UberGo for similar distances

According to Cassie Jaganyi, Uber South Africa’s head of communications, the pilot programme is designed to fill transportation gaps in areas with limited ride-hailing coverage.

Uber Moto has been successfully introduced in cities like Bangkok, Rio de Janeiro, and Cairo, and operates in places like Lagos and Bengaluru. While Uber already uses motorbikes for Uber Eats deliveries in South Africa, this is the first time passengers can book motorcycle rides through the app.

While the service is currently limited to Johannesburg, Uber is exploring expansion to other cities based on the pilot’s success. Discussions with local stakeholders are ongoing to ensure the service aligns with safety regulations and urban transport needs.
