US President Donald Trump has selected conservative media figure and pro-Israel advocate, Brent Bozell III, as his nominee for the next ambassador to South Africa.

The nomination was officially announced on the US Congress website on Tuesday. Since Trump assumed office three months ago, the United States has lacked an ambassador to Pretoria amid tensions between the two nations.

Senior US officials have publicly cited South Africa’s genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) as a major factor in the strained relationship between the two governments.

Bozell, known for his strong pro-Israel stance, has expressed his views by prominently displaying both the US and Israeli flags on his social media profiles.

Meanwhile, President Cyril Ramaphosa, speaking at the Democratic Nursing Organisation of South Africa (DENOSA) conference on Tuesday, stated that he is not required to consult with other parties in the Government of National Unity (GNU) regarding the appointment of the new US ambassador.

“The appointment of ambassadors is the sole responsibility of the president,” Ramaphosa confirmed.

He assured that a highly qualified diplomat would be chosen to represent South Africa’s interests in the United States.
