Emergency response teams were deployed to Montana, Pretoria North, on Tuesday night after a tornado caused widespread damage, tearing through buildings, vehicles, and infrastructure.

The City of Tshwane’s Emergency Services Department dispatched firefighters and rescue teams after reports of severe storm damage. Initial calls to the Emergency Communication Centre (ECC) at 6 PM were logged as flooding, but upon arrival, teams found extensive destruction caused by strong winds.

Emergency spokesperson Lindsay Zwelithini Mnguni confirmed that crews from Innesdale, Wonderboom, and Rosslyn fire stations responded, deploying swiftwater rescue units, rapid intervention teams, and video surveillance units.

The tornado uprooted trees and ripped corrugated iron roofs from buildings and carports along Sefako Makgatho Drive. The worst-hit area was a residential complex in Veda Street, where upper floors suffered structural damage, with exposed geyser units and collapsed roofing allowing rainwater to flood apartments. Residents were evacuated to nearby housing while disaster management teams assessed the damage.

Additional reports of flooding were received from Mabopane and Pretoria North, prompting more fire and rescue units to assist affected residents. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported.

SAWS had previously issued an Orange Level 5 warning for severe thunderstorms and heavy rain in Gauteng, predicting dangerous flooding of roads, bridges, and settlements.

Authorities have urged residents to stay indoors, avoid metal objects, and refrain from crossing waterlogged roads or swollen streams. Motorists have been warned about slippery conditions and reduced visibility.

Emergency teams remain on high alert, with forecasts indicating continued heavy rainfall throughout the week.

Residents can report emergencies by calling 107 (toll-free) or 012 358 6300/6400.
