Toll Fee Increases in 2025: What You’ll Pay for Major Routes Starting March

Published

on

The South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL) has announced toll fee hikes set to take effect on 1 March 2025. The new tariffs, which will see an increase of 4.84%, will affect key routes such as the N1, N3, and N4.

The new fees will bring the toll charges for standard light vehicles on the N1 “Platinum Route” between R7.20 and R108, while the busy N3 route will range from R20 to R347.

This year’s increase is lower than the 6.25% hike seen in 2024.

SANRAL Explains the Need for Hike

SANRAL’s General Manager for Communications and Marketing, Vusi Mona, explained that the toll revenue is crucial for maintaining, operating, and improving South Africa’s road infrastructure. This revenue also helps to service debts from toll road projects.

“Ensuring a quality road network is vital for meeting the needs of both industrial and household sectors,” said Mona. He also noted that while SANRAL understands the economic strain on the public, these adjustments are necessary for the agency to continue providing safe and reliable roads.

Travel Costs for Popular Routes in 2025

As toll fees increase, so will the overall costs of traveling by road. According to BusinessTech’s estimates, the total cost for a journey on South Africa’s busiest routes will increase due to higher petrol prices and toll charges. Here’s an estimate of how much it would cost to drive from Johannesburg to major destinations, considering both fuel and tolls.

Destination Total Toll Fee Estimated Total Cost (Toyota Hilux) Estimated Total Cost (Toyota Swift)
Johannesburg to Cape Town R245 R2,267 R1,765
Johannesburg to Durban R334 R1,158 R954
Johannesburg to Kruger Park R295 R891 R743

How Higher Costs Impact Motorists

Motorists can expect a tougher financial landscape in March 2025 with these toll hikes combined with rising fuel prices. The global oil price increase, combined with a weaker rand, means South African drivers are facing significant fuel cost increases, adding more financial strain on road users.

In response, SANRAL assures the public that toll hikes are essential for maintaining road safety and infrastructure, which is crucial for the country’s continued economic development.
