Lehlohonolo Maakhi Sentenced to 25 Years for Rape and Robbery in Thabong
Lehlohonolo Maakhi, a 23-year-old from Thabong, Free State, has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for raping and robbing a woman at knifepoint. The Thabong Regional Court handed down the sentence following a thorough investigation by the South African Police Service.
The crime occurred in April 2019 after a late-night church gathering. A 23-year-old woman accepted an invitation from a friend to collect blankets, joining a small group. On their way back to the church, two boys warned them to flee, prompting the group to scatter and leaving the victim vulnerable and alone.
“She was caught by one 23-year-old suspect who threatened her with a knife and forced her into a deserted house, requesting her to have sex with him, but she refused,” explained Sergeant Mahlomola Kareli, SAPS spokesperson.
Maakhi dragged the victim to an open field, where he raped her at knifepoint and stole her cellphone. He then attempted to take her to a nearby shack, but she managed to escape and report the assault to the authorities.
The case was assigned to the Thabong Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences Unit. Sergeant Themba Jilimba led the investigation, working closely with Mr. Masoane from the National Prosecuting Authority. Their efforts resulted in Maakhi’s conviction and a 25-year sentence for both rape and robbery.
Sergeant Kareli commended the teamwork and dedication of the investigators and legal team, emphasizing the importance of protecting vulnerable members of society and holding perpetrators accountable.
This case highlights the need for continued vigilance in addressing gender-based violence and ensuring justice for victims.
