Table Mountain Fire Still Uncontained as Flames Approach Chapman’s Peak

The Table Mountain fire, which ignited on Friday, April 25, continues to burn and remains uncontained, according to the City of Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue Services.
Despite continuous efforts, firefighters are still on the ground, monitoring the situation and working to prevent further spread. City spokesperson Jermaine Carelse confirmed on Monday that two fire lines are now creeping dangerously close to Chapman’s Peak, raising concerns among emergency teams.
“Crews from the City’s Fire and Rescue Service, Table Mountain National Park (TMNP), NCC, and Volunteer Wildfire Services (VWS) remain on the scene to continue active firefighting and watch for potential flare-ups,” said Carelse.
Public Urged to Avoid Affected Areas
Authorities are urging residents and visitors to stay away from the South Peninsula areas affected by the fire. The presence of heavy smoke and emergency vehicles poses a danger to the public and can hinder operations.
“This is a reminder to please steer clear of the affected areas for your own safety and to give firefighters the space they need to do their jobs,” Carelse added.
He also extended heartfelt thanks to community members, businesses, and organisations who donated food and drinks to support frontline firefighters. Donations are now closed as current supplies are sufficient to sustain the teams.
Road Closures Still in Effect
Traffic in and around the affected zones remains heavily disrupted. Maxine Bezuidenhout, spokesperson for the City of Cape Town’s Traffic Services, confirmed that several key roads have been closed:
-
Westlake Drive and Boyes Drive
-
Tokai Road and Zwaanswyk Road
-
Old Boyes and Boyes Drive
-
Boyes and Anderson Road
-
Main Road and Old Boyes Drive
-
Main Road and Boyes Drive
-
Main and Clairvaux Drive
“Please avoid non-essential travel in these areas,” said Bezuidenhout. “Surrounding routes are likely to experience delays due to diverted traffic.”
Stay Informed and Stay Safe
Fire authorities continue to monitor the blaze and issue updates. Residents are encouraged to follow official City of Cape Town social media channels and local news for the latest developments.
The situation remains fluid, and while containment remains a challenge, the combined efforts of multiple firefighting units are helping to manage the fire and limit its spread.
