Hitchhiker Shoots Robbers, Kills One During Attempted Mugging Near Suikerbosrand

A suspected robbery went fatally wrong for a group of alleged criminals when their intended victim, a hitchhiker, turned the tables and opened fire during an attack along the R550 near Suikerbosrand in Gauteng on Friday, 11 April 2025.

The incident unfolded after the man accepted a ride from three individuals in a red VW Polo while on the N3 near Vosloorus. However, instead of heading to his destination, the driver veered off route, and the passengers pulled knives, demanding money. Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said the suspects took the victim’s purse containing cash before the situation changed dramatically.

“He then pulled out his licensed firearm, fatally shooting one suspect and seriously wounding the other two,” she said.

Zonkizizwe police arrived to find one suspect, aged 42, dead on the scene. The two surviving suspects, aged 32 and 43, were arrested and are currently under police guard in hospital. A case of armed robbery has been opened, along with an inquest docket. Investigations are ongoing.
