Driver Arrested in Limpopo for Possession of Suspected Stolen SUV
A 55-year-old man was arrested by Limpopo’s provincial anti-smuggling team after being found in possession of a suspected stolen Jeep Grand Cherokee on Wednesday. The arrest followed a swift police operation triggered by intelligence about the vehicle, which was reportedly stolen in Gauteng.
Lieutenant Colonel Stephen Thakeng explained that police were tipped off about a silver 4×4 Jeep Grand Cherokee headed towards the Musina area under the Vhembe district. Officers immediately activated a search and spotted the vehicle traveling on the N1 South highway near Polokwane.
The provincial anti-smuggling team intercepted the vehicle near the Shell Ultra City filling station. Upon inspection, it was discovered that the SUV’s chassis and engine numbers had been tampered with.
The driver, unable to provide a satisfactory explanation for the vehicle’s origin, was arrested on charges of possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle. The Jeep Grand Cherokee, valued at approximately R500,000, was seized as part of the investigation.
“The arrested man will appear before the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court on Friday, facing charges under the National Road Traffic Act and for possession of a suspected stolen vehicle,” added Thakeng.
This arrest is not an isolated incident. In August, the Mokopane Regional Court sentenced Vusi Vincent Moloka to seven years in prison for possession of a stolen Toyota Fortuner. The case highlighted the collaboration between law enforcement and private security firms, which successfully tracked and recovered the stolen vehicle.
Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, speaking on the earlier case, commended the efforts of the Modimolle Vehicle Crime Investigation Unit (VCIU), noting their thorough investigative work and success in opposing bail.
As investigations into the origins of the Jeep Grand Cherokee continue, this incident underscores the ongoing battle against vehicle theft in Limpopo and the vigilance of law enforcement in curbing smuggling and related crimes.
