Community March in Soweto Over Alleged School Rape in Eastern Cape

Soweto residents are preparing to lead a community picket this Sunday, demanding justice for a seven-year-old girl who was allegedly raped at a school in Matatiele, Eastern Cape.
Community calls for accountability and action
The demonstration is part of a growing national outcry against gender-based violence. Local organisers say the event will raise awareness and challenge the silence surrounding the abuse of women, children, and vulnerable groups.
Picket convenor Mathapelo Ndaba confirmed that a memorandum of demands will be handed over to leadership at the Moroka Police Station during the protest.
“We are calling for accountability and swift action from law enforcement in cases like these,” said Ndaba. “This cannot be allowed to go unchallenged.”

No political banners allowed at community-led picket
Ndaba stressed that the protest is a non-political community effort and warned against the involvement of political parties trying to use the march for campaigning.
“This is a very sensitive issue, and we will not tolerate political hijacking, especially from the MK party,” she said. “This is a march by and for community members. Any organisation is welcome to join, but only as individuals—not as political representatives.”
The picket is expected to draw widespread support from Soweto and beyond, as South Africans continue to call for stronger action against gender-based violence.
