How South Africans Can Earn Through TikTok: Unlocking Monetisation Tools

TikTok has long been a platform where creators can showcase their talent, and contrary to popular belief, African creators are not left behind when it comes to monetisation. While the full launch of TikTok’s Creator Rewards Programme is still pending in Africa, there are already several features in place that allow South African creators to turn their content into cash.
Boniswa Sidwaba, TikTok’s Head of Content Operations for Sub-Saharan Africa, clarified that the platform is not intentionally excluding African creators. “We test features before they go global, but there are already many tools African creators can use to benefit,” Sidwaba explained.
Monetisation Options for South African TikTok Creators
Live Gifts: Real-Time Earnings
Creators can go live on TikTok and enable the live gifts feature, allowing viewers to send virtual gifts during broadcasts. These gifts can be converted into real money, rewarding creators for engaging, high-quality live content.
Video Gifts: Turning Pre-Recorded Content Into Income
For creators who prefer posting pre-recorded content, video gifts provide an opportunity to earn from their videos without going live. Viewers can send rewards, offering another potential revenue stream for creators.
Effect Creator Rewards: Earnings Through Creativity
TikTok’s Effect House enables creators to design interactive effects, such as AI art or games, and earn cash rewards based on the creativity of their work. This feature blends artistic expression with monetisation, empowering creators to make money while showcasing their skills. Creators can offer exclusive perks to their followers through monthly subscriptions, even if they don’t go live. This option helps foster dedicated communities while providing a consistent revenue stream for creators.
Partnering with Artists: Promoting Music and Earning Rewards
Creators can collaborate with artists to promote music by creating viral videos. Rewards are based on the video’s performance, allowing creators to support music promotion and earn money at the same time.
Sidwaba further stated, “We’re committed to giving creators the tools to grow, connect with audiences, and build sustainable careers. TikTok is more than just entertainment. It’s a place where creators can thrive.”
While some global features are still being tested, South African creators are already leveraging available tools to make their mark and build rewarding careers on the platform.
