Siv Ngesi and Josh Rubin Explore Orania: Inside South Africa’s Afrikaner Enclave

For many South Africans, Orania is a town shrouded in mystery and controversy. Situated along the Orange River in the Karoo region, it has long been a subject of debate—particularly among black communities, where it is often associated with exclusion and segregation.
Founded in 1991 as a refuge for white Afrikaners to preserve their culture, language, and traditions, Orania remains a symbol of both fascination and division in modern South Africa.
In an effort to unravel the truth behind Orania, podcast host Josh Rubin embarked on an eye-opening journey alongside actor and comedian Siv Ngesi. Their investigation, captured in the documentary “Black Investigates South Africa’s Whites-Only Town”, raises thought-provoking questions about inclusivity, cultural heritage, and national identity.
The duo set out on a ten-hour drive to the town, determined to challenge perceptions and explore whether Orania is truly “black-friendly”.

With a population nearing 3,000, Orania operates as a self-sustaining community. It has its own government, currency, and strict regulations for residency.
To live in Orania, applicants must be white Afrikaners, fluent in Afrikaans, adhere to Calvinist Christian values, and have a clean criminal record. These criteria, coupled with its insular nature, have fueled debates over whether the town represents cultural preservation or exclusionary practices.
Upon arrival, Ngesi was struck by Orania’s modern infrastructure and economic vibrancy, aspects that defy common perceptions of the town as outdated or isolated. However, its strong Afrikaans identity remains deeply ingrained in every aspect of daily life.
The documentary delves beyond the physical town, offering a psychological exploration of a community that has chosen to remain separate from South Africa’s broader social landscape.
Through historical narratives and personal experiences, Rubin and Ngesi provide a lens for audiences to reconsider their own perceptions of Orania.
As South Africa continues to grapple with questions of unity, diversity, and identity, the conversation around Orania remains a powerful reflection of the country’s complex social and historical fabric.
