Gauteng on Alert: Severe Thunderstorms and Flood Warnings for Tshwane and Joburg

Tshwane and Johannesburg remain on high alert as the South African Weather Service (SAWS) issues a yellow level 3 warning for severe thunderstorms in Gauteng. A cut-off low weather system is expected to impact large parts of the province starting Wednesday, bringing with it widespread rainfall, strong winds, and the potential for flooding.
According to SAWS, there is a 60% to 80% chance of rain in Tshwane, with thunderstorms expected to persist from late morning until midnight. Rainfall totals are anticipated to exceed 50mm in some areas, particularly across the central and eastern parts of the country. The system is forecast to move slowly eastward and exit the country by Saturday.
Emergency Services on High Alert
Emergency services in both Tshwane and Johannesburg have stepped up readiness to respond to weather-related incidents.
Lindsay Zwelithini Mnguni, spokesperson for Tshwane Emergency Services, highlighted the risks:
“We may see localised flooding in low-lying areas and roads. There’s also a danger of large hail, damaging winds, and lightning strikes, which could lead to power failures, structural fires, and traffic disruptions.”
Mnguni advised residents to stay indoors if possible, and avoid metal objects like barbed wire or fences during lightning storms.
Johannesburg EMS spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi also warned motorists to drive carefully:
“Maintain a safe following distance and avoid flooded bridges and low-lying roads. We’re monitoring all seven regions of the city for emergencies.”
Widespread Impact Beyond Gauteng
The impact isn’t limited to Gauteng. SAWS warned that the Free State and North West provinces could also face significant risks. Thunderstorms in these areas may result in damage to property, infrastructure, and even the loss of livestock and livelihoods. Large hail remains a possibility, adding to the potential destruction.
What Residents Should Do
Authorities have urged residents to:
-
Stay indoors where possible.
-
Avoid driving in heavy rain or flooded areas.
-
Unplug sensitive electronics during lightning activity.
-
Follow official updates from emergency services and SAWS.
With the cut-off low expected to linger until Saturday, staying informed and cautious is crucial.
