Tembisa Hospital fire: Emergency care continues as new blaze erupts

Published

on

Just days after a blaze damaged parts of Tembisa Hospital, a second fire broke out on Wednesday, this time affecting the main outpatient department near the already-affected Accident and Emergency Unit.

Emergency services were quickly deployed to the Ekurhuleni-based provincial hospital, as Gauteng health officials confirmed they are investigating the cause of both incidents.

Patients safely evacuated, services adapted

Gauteng Health MEC Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko, who visited the hospital after the first fire, said that all 81 patients had been safely moved during the weekend evacuation. A temporary emergency unit has since been set up to ensure uninterrupted medical care.

Despite the disruption, the hospital continues to operate for critical cases and walk-ins, though ambulance arrivals are now being redirected to other facilities.

Authorities have yet to confirm the cause of either fire. Both incidents remain under investigation as officials work to determine if they are linked or accidental.

No injuries have been reported so far in either fire, and hospital staff are working to ensure safety while maintaining essential healthcare services.
