SASSA Card Swap Deadline Approaches: What Beneficiaries Need to Know

Social grant recipients must swap their SASSA gold cards for the new Postbank black cards before the March 20, 2025 deadline. Failure to do so could result in disruptions when trying to access funds.

The Department of Social Development has warned that after the deadline, SASSA gold cards will no longer be valid for transactions, even if money remains in the account.

What Happens After March 20?

According to Postbank CEO Nikki Mbengashe, after March 20:

SASSA gold cards will not work for purchases or withdrawals in stores.
Retailers will decline transactions made with SASSA gold cards.
ATMs will not accept SASSA gold cards, and they may be swallowed if inserted.

To avoid any issues, recipients should swap their gold cards for a Postbank black card as soon as possible.

Will My April Grant Payment Be Affected?

No. Social grant recipients can still collect their April grant payments, scheduled for April 3 – 5, 2025. However, those who haven’t replaced their SASSA gold cards will have to visit a Post Office with a valid South African ID or temporary ID to withdraw funds.

Mbengashe confirmed that Post Office payments will be limited to:

Beneficiaries who have not yet replaced their SASSA gold cards.
Asylum seekers receiving social grants.
Holders of Postbank green Mzansi or blue cards.

Where to Get Your New Postbank Black Card

Recipients can swap their SASSA gold card for a Postbank black card at the following retailers:

Checkers
Shoprite
Pick n Pay
Usave
Boxer

To receive a new card, you must bring a valid South African ID or temporary ID.

Postbank’s Continued Card Replacement

Even after the March 20 deadline, Postbank will continue replacing SASSA gold cards with Postbank black cards at their designated card replacement sites.
