Chairperson of the Select Committee on Security and Justice, Jane Mananiso, has praised the South African Police Service (SAPS) for making strides in reducing crime, particularly gender-based violence (GBV) and femicide.

The latest Third Quarter Crime Statistics for 2024 reveal a 9.8% drop in murders, a 3.3% decline in rape cases, and a 3.2% decrease in attempted sexual offences. Mananiso highlighted that these reductions were especially significant, given the usual spike in crime during the festive season.

“The committee commends SAPS for ensuring a reduction in crime statistics. We have closely looked at the decline in gender-based violence and femicide cases, which is especially commendable as South Africa has struggled with this issue for years. Our women and children have not been safe,” she said.

However, while acknowledging the progress, Mananiso stressed that crime remains a major issue. She urged SAPS to intensify its efforts to ensure even greater reductions, particularly in serious crimes.

The Select Committee on Security and Justice, along with the Portfolio Committee on Police, plans to engage with SAPS and local communities in April 2025 to address rising gang violence and extortion in the Western Cape. The goal is to develop solutions that could be applied to other affected provinces.

Mananiso also commended community efforts in tackling crime, stating, “By working together, we will see further reductions in crime and violence, ensuring our citizens live in safety.”
