Minister Announces Return of Injured SANDF Soldiers from DRC Mission

Minister of Defence and Military Veterans Angie Motshekga has confirmed that injured members of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) involved in clashes with M23 rebels in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) will soon return home. This announcement follows the cancellation of a mission that was initially set to bring back over 100 injured and ill SANDF soldiers.
Motshekga shared the update during the funeral of Rifleman Richard Chokoe, one of the 14 SANDF members who lost their lives in the conflict. Speaking to Newzroom Afrika, the Minister underscored the government’s commitment to supporting soldiers in the field, pledging to provide necessary assistance to the families of the fallen soldiers.
“We expect the injured to be back soon, and we remain in close communication with those still on other missions in the DRC,” Motshekga said.

“Our soldiers face unimaginable challenges in the field, and it is our duty to ensure they have the support they need to succeed and safely return home. As the government, we are dedicated to working alongside them and ensuring they receive all necessary assistance.”
The Minister also expressed confidence in South Africa’s international relations, highlighting the positive developments in the DRC situation, further endorsed by the United Nations and the African Union.
