The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) has confirmed that all wounded soldiers requiring medical attention have been successfully repatriated from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

Rear Admiral (Junior Grade) Prince Tshabalala stated that four soldiers are being treated for critical injuries, while 17 have been admitted to 1 Military Hospital for moderate injuries. Additionally, 106 soldiers require psychological and social intervention.

For security reasons, the SANDF did not disclose how many soldiers remain deployed in the DRC, where they have been stationed as part of the United Nations’ MONUSCO peacekeeping mission.

Earlier this month, the remains of 14 soldiers killed in combat were brought back to South Africa.

Meanwhile, the Select Committee on Security and Justice has called for recognition of two pregnant soldiers who were part of the mission. Chairperson Jane Mananiso urged the SANDF to implement proper pregnancy testing before deployment to ensure adequate prenatal medical care and prevent soldiers from being placed in compromising positions.

The two pregnant soldiers were among the 127 repatriated this week.
