SACP Security Beefed Up After Mapaila Assassination Attempt

The South African Communist Party (SACP) is tightening security around its leadership following an alleged assassination attempt on senior official Solly Mapaila. The incident raised concerns about SACP leadership safety, the second such issue in recent months.

Earlier this year, Blade Nzimande revealed that SACP leaders were being targeted with surveillance and phone tapping The threat of a SACP security assassination has left the party no choice but to review and upgrade security protocols.

SACP Security Assassination Concerns

SACP spokesperson Alex Mashilo confirmed they are assessing security needs, stating, “We agreed to thoroughly assess and beef up security for leaders and all SACP events.”

The review follows a viral video of a man pointing a gun at Mapaila during the Chris Hani assassination anniversary. According to reports, the alleged gunman was prevented from shooting after noticing that he was being watched.

Mapaila Unshaken by Assassination Threats

Despite the assassination attempt, Solly Mapaila remains committed to his work. “I have faced threats for years. The real issue here is how those defending corruption are willing to go to any lengths, including attempting a SACP security assassination,” he said. “I am glad to be alive and will continue my fight against corruption.”

The assassination attempt comes amid rising political tensions, with officials like Human Settlements Minister Lindiwe Sisulu receiving death threats for criticizing former President Jacob Zuma.

ANC Condemns the Assassination Attempt

The African National Congress (ANC) has strongly condemned the assassination attempt. Khusela Sangoni, the ANC’s spokesperson, stated, “We denounce these criminal acts and await further details on what transpired.”

As investigations continue, the SACP is moving quickly to safeguard its leadership in the wake of the assassination attempt.
