Fuel Price Relief Ahead: Petrol and Diesel Set for Major Drop Next Week

South African motorists can finally breathe a sigh of relief as fuel prices are set for a significant drop next week. According to the latest data from the Central Energy Fund (CEF), both petrol and diesel will see substantial decreases, offering much-needed relief at the pumps.
Expected Price Cuts (Effective 1 April 2025)
Here’s the projected price drop per litre:
Fuel Type | Price Decrease |
---|---|
Petrol 93 | 66 cents |
Petrol 95 | 80 cents |
Diesel 0.05% | 91 cents |
Diesel 0.005% | 93 cents |
Illuminating Paraffin | 85 cents |
If current market trends hold, 95 octane petrol will see the biggest cut (80 cents), while diesel users could save up to 93 cents per litre.
Why Are Fuel Prices Dropping?
Two key factors are driving the decrease:
- Stronger Rand Performance – The local currency has gained against the US dollar, trading at R18.22/$ (at the time of reporting).
- Lower Global Oil Prices – Brent crude oil has dipped to $73.54 per barrel, easing pressure on fuel costs.
However, economists warn that ongoing global trade tensions—particularly US tariff policies under President Donald Trump—could still impact future fuel prices.
