Free Rubella Vaccines Available for Children in South Africa: What Parents Need to Know

Published

on

South Africa’s public health system offers Rubella vaccines at no cost as part of the Expanded Programme on Immunisation (EPI). Administered alongside the Measles vaccine, the Measles and Rubella (MR) vaccine is a critical step in protecting children against these highly infectious diseases.

When Is the Rubella Vaccine Administered?

The MR vaccine is provided in two doses:

  1. First dose: At 6 months after birth.
  2. Second dose: At 12 months after birth.

This routine immunisation schedule ensures that children receive optimal protection during their early years when they are most vulnerable to these illnesses.

Children who have already received their measles vaccines at 6 and 12 months do not require an additional MR vaccine. This streamlined approach helps avoid over-immunisation while maintaining adequate disease prevention.

Rubella, also known as German measles, can lead to severe complications, particularly if contracted during pregnancy. Vaccination protects not only the individual child but also contributes to community immunity, safeguarding vulnerable groups like pregnant women and newborns.

The Department of Health encourages all parents and caregivers to ensure their children’s vaccines are up to date. By adhering to the EPI schedule, families can contribute to a healthier South Africa, free from preventable diseases like Rubella and Measles.

For more information about routine immunisation, visit your nearest public clinic or consult your healthcare provider. Let’s work together to keep our children safe and healthy.
