Riverlea High Matrics Push Forward After Devastating School Fire

Published

on

Despite a fire that destroyed 11 classrooms just days before the start of the new term, Grade 12 learners at Riverlea High School are pushing forward with preparations for their crucial June examinations.

On Sunday evening, April 27, at around 6pm, a fire broke out on the school grounds, damaging a large portion of the building, including four classrooms that were in active use by Grade 8 pupils. The remaining affected rooms were unoccupied at the time. In addition to the classrooms, the entire boys’ toilet block was completely destroyed, leaving hundreds of learners impacted by the devastation.

According to the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE), approximately 230 learners have been directly affected. While investigations into the cause of the fire are still ongoing, authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward.

Matrics Determined to Stay on Track

In an effort to minimise disruption to teaching and learning, the department and school leadership have acted swiftly to implement contingency measures. The deputy chairperson of the Student Governing Body (SGB), Kegan Everson, confirmed that at least four mobile classrooms are being installed to accommodate the matric class.

“We are doing everything possible to ensure our matrics continue with their curriculum and exam preparations,” Everson said. “We’ve also arranged for the school hall to serve as a temporary teaching space.”

Two of the mobile units have already been secured from nearby schools, and more are expected to arrive soon.

GDE Commits to Ongoing Support

Gauteng Education Spokesperson Steve Mabona reassured parents and the community that plans are in motion to resume normal academic activity.

“Our focus is on the safety and continued learning of our learners. We’ve already deployed resources and secured additional mobile classrooms while investigations continue into the fire,” said Mabona.

The department also confirmed that curriculum delivery will not be suspended, and alternative learning spaces are being optimised to accommodate affected pupils.

Community Urged to Assist with Investigation

While the cause of the fire remains unknown, the GDE has appealed to the public to come forward with any information that could assist the ongoing investigation.

The incident has deeply affected the Riverlea community, but the resilience shown by both learners and staff has been widely praised. As matrics continue to prepare for their exams under challenging conditions, the story of Riverlea High is fast becoming one of hope, courage, and determination.

The fire at Riverlea High School may have disrupted classrooms, but not the spirit of its learners. As mobile units arrive and the school rallies to ensure continuity in education, this community shows what’s possible when students, staff, and officials come together in crisis.
