President Cyril Ramaphosa has described the United States’ decision to reduce aid funding to South Africa as a “wake-up call,” urging the country to become more self-reliant in developing its own resources.

Previously, the US provided around $448.5 million to support South Africa’s health programmes, especially in the fight against HIV/AIDS. However, under President Donald Trump, aid funding to several nations, including South Africa, has been reduced.

While acknowledging that it is the US’s right to cut funding, Ramaphosa stressed the need for South Africa to focus on using its own resources to ensure the well-being of its citizens.

“It is entirely their right. It’s their own money. In many ways, it’s a wake-up call for us as South Africans. We must find ways to be self-reliant, relying on our own resources. Our people expect this, even with our fiscal challenges,” Ramaphosa stated.

He further emphasized that the country’s sovereignty is important, and it should always strive to take care of its citizens with its own resources.

The president made these comments on Tuesday during the Democratic Nursing Organisation of South Africa (DENOSA)’s ninth congress at the Birchwood Hotel in Boksburg. The conference will discuss various issues affecting the healthcare sector, including the impact of the US funding cut.
