President Cyril Ramaphosa is set to lead the South African delegation at the 38th Session of the Assembly of African Heads of State and Government. The African Union (AU) summit, scheduled for this weekend in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, will focus on significant issues, including the election of a new AU Commission chair and deputy.

Under the AU’s 2025 theme, “Justice for African and People of African Descent Through Reparations,” the summit aims to address long-standing concerns over the effects of colonialism, apartheid, and slavery. The Presidency noted that the Assembly will review Africa’s efforts toward achieving justice and securing reparations for past injustices.

In a statement, Presidency spokesperson Vincent Magwenya emphasized the challenges facing the continent, such as threats to democratic governance, peace, and security, citing issues like unconstitutional government changes and post-election violence. He also highlighted the numerous challenges Africa continues to face, including internal conflicts, terrorism, poverty, food insecurity, climate change, and infrastructure deficits.

Magwenya reiterated South Africa’s pivotal role in addressing these challenges, noting the country’s active participation in several peacekeeping and mediation efforts across Africa. South Africa is notably involved in the AU Ad-hoc High-Level Committee on South Sudan, the AU Ad-Hoc High-Level Committee on Libya, and has deployed troops as part of the SADC Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (SAMIDRC).

President Ramaphosa will be joined by key South African ministers, including Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Mr Ronald Lamola; Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, Ms Angie Motshekga; Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development, Ms Mmamoloko Kubayi; Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition, Mr Parks Tau; Minister in the Presidency, Ms Khumbudzo Ntshavheni; Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and Environment, Mr Dion George; Minister of Water and Sanitation, Pemmy Majodina; and Minister of Public Service and Administration, Inkosi Mzamo Buthelezi.
