Ramaphosa Pledges More Healthcare Workers Despite Budget Cuts

President Cyril Ramaphosa has committed to increasing investments in the healthcare sector by hiring more doctors and nurses, despite ongoing financial challenges faced by the government.
Over recent years, the National Treasury has implemented strict cost-cutting measures across various government departments, including healthcare. However, the need for a stronger healthcare workforce remains urgent, particularly as the country prepares for key reforms like the National Health Insurance (NHI).
Speaking at the Democratic Nursing Organisation of South Africa (DENOSA)’s 9th Congress, held at the Birchwood Hotel in Boksburg on Tuesday, Ramaphosa acknowledged the severe shortage of healthcare personnel in the country’s medical facilities.
“Despite the financial constraints, we are determined to allocate more resources to the health sector. Our aim is to employ more nurses and doctors, including those currently unemployed,” Ramaphosa said.
Ramaphosa emphasized the crucial role that nurses will play in the success of the National Health Insurance. According to the president, the ability of nurses to enhance healthcare delivery will be a key factor in the public’s perception of the NHI’s effectiveness.
“When people look at how the NHI is being implemented, the first point of reference will be the capabilities of our nurses. You will be at the center of it all, as people will look to you for better healthcare services,” he stated.
This announcement highlights the government’s renewed focus on strengthening the healthcare workforce, even as the country navigates financial constraints.
