The Radium Beer Hall, Johannesburg’s oldest running bar, loyal patrons gather to enjoy live jazz, flowing drinks, and the warm, nostalgic atmosphere that has defined this iconic establishment for nearly a century.

Despite challenges over the years, The Radium remains open, holding onto its rich history and unique charm under the leadership of Lina Cabeleira, widow of the late Manny Cabeleira, who transformed the venue into a cultural landmark.

A Legacy That Lives On

Founded in 1929 as The Radium Tearoom, the establishment originally disguised illegal beer sales behind the façade of a tea shop. In 1942, it officially became a beer hall, serving as a men-only bar before evolving into the diverse, inclusive venue it is today.

When Manny Cabeleira purchased the bar in 1986, he introduced live music, a restaurant, and a vibrant personality that made The Radium a go-to destination for locals and global celebrities, including Brad Pitt, Thabo Mbeki, Jacob Zuma, and Cyril Ramaphosa.

Manny’s knack for publicity led to memorable events like the “beer carnival” and a mock funeral that humorously brought traffic on Louis Botha Avenue to a standstill. His vision turned The Radium into a celebrated spot, frequently featured in international travel guides.

Keeping the Doors Open

Following Manny’s passing in 2021, Lina took over the reins with a determination to preserve his legacy. Though economic struggles and the COVID-19 pandemic took their toll, she remains committed to reaching the 100-year milestone.

“I want to make Manny proud. I’m not doing this to be rich—I just want to carry on this great legacy,” Lina said.

Despite the changes in the neighborhood, The Radium remains a safe, inclusive space, offering affordable meals, great music, and a welcoming community spirit. Patrons continue to return, drawn by the history, familiar faces, and the unique atmosphere that only The Radium can offer.

A Bright Future Ahead

Long-time patron Stuart Karovsky describes The Radium as a place to connect with friends, enjoy live entertainment, and experience South African musical talent.

“There is a constant flow of live music on weekends and even some weeknights. We’re all hoping and pulling for The Radium to reach its 100-year milestone,” he said.

As Lina reassures visitors: The Radium is open, the spirit is alive, and the legacy continues.
