A 50-year-old man, whose racist video has sparked outrage on social media, is set to appear in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court on Friday. The footage, which has been widely circulated, shows him making inflammatory remarks and using racial slurs, prompting swift action from law enforcement.

In the three-minute and 30-second clip, the man introduces himself before launching into a racist tirade, urging white people worldwide to “wake up.” His speech quickly escalates into explicit hate speech, including derogatory terms and violent threats.

At one point in the video, he alleges that Black South Africans pose a danger to white citizens, making grotesque and unfounded claims about violence. He further insults political leaders, directing expletives at Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema and President Cyril Ramaphosa.

The video’s widespread circulation has led to public condemnation, with many calling for his immediate prosecution.

Brigadier Novela Potelwa, spokesperson for the Western Cape police, confirmed that an investigation was launched by the Western Cape Commercial Crimes Unit following a formal complaint.

“The remarks in the video, whose basis is not apparent, explicitly detail the type of harm that white people are set to suffer at the hands of Black people. He calls on white people to wake up from their slumber. Reference in an insulting manner is also made to two politicians by name,” Potelwa stated.

Authorities tracked the suspect to a location in the Eastern Cape, where he was arrested on Wednesday. He now faces charges of crimen injuria and violations under the Cyber Act, with additional charges potentially being added as the investigation progresses.

Following the incident, police issued a stern warning to social media users, emphasizing that irresponsible online behavior could have severe legal consequences.

As the case unfolds, it underscores the growing vigilance of law enforcement in tackling hate speech and cyber-related crimes in South Africa.
