Pretoria’s Most Dangerous Suburbs Revealed: Is Your Neighborhood on the List?

Published

on

Pretoria residents, take note: the latest crime statistics released by the South African Police Service (SAPS) have identified several suburbs as some of the most dangerous in the country. With alarming rates of serious crimes such as rape, robbery, sexual assault, and murder, these areas have been flagged as high-risk zones.

The data, covering the third quarter of the 2024/2025 financial year (1 October to 31 December 2024), was recently presented by Police Minister Senzo Mchunu. While there has been a slight decrease in some crime categories compared to the previous year, the numbers remain deeply concerning.

Crime Trends in Pretoria

According to the report, an average of 75.5 murders were committed daily across South Africa during this period. Additionally, approximately 128 rape cases were reported each day. Gauteng, which includes Pretoria, remains one of the provinces most affected by crime, alongside KwaZulu-Natal, the Eastern Cape, and the Western Cape.

Here’s a closer look at Pretoria’s most dangerous suburbs and the types of crimes frequently reported in these areas:

1. Akasia
Akasia has emerged as one of Pretoria’s crime hotspots, with a high incidence of:

  • Kidnappings
  • Contact crimes
  • Common assaults
  • Robberies with aggravating circumstances
  • Property-related crimes
  • Motor vehicle theft
  • Malicious damage to property

Residents in this area are urged to remain vigilant and take extra precautions to ensure their safety.

2. Mamelodi East
Mamelodi East has also been flagged for its high crime rates, particularly in:

  • Rape and sexual offences
  • Gender-based violence (GBV) assaults
  • Common assault
  • Robbery with aggravating circumstances
  • Trio crimes (carjackings, residential and non-residential robberies)
  • Motor vehicle theft
  • Malicious damage to property

The prevalence of gender-based violence in this area is particularly alarming, highlighting the need for increased community support and law enforcement intervention.

3. Temba
Temba’s crime trends closely mirror those of Mamelodi East, with frequent reports of:

  • Rape and sexual offences
  • Common assault
  • House break-ins
  • Robbery with aggravating circumstances
  • Trio crimes (carjackings, home and business robberies)
  • Motor vehicle theft
  • Malicious damage to property

While Minister Mchunu noted a reduction in some crime categories, he emphasized that more work is needed to address the root causes of crime in these areas.

What’s Being Done?

The SAPS has acknowledged the severity of the situation and is working to implement strategies to combat crime in these high-risk areas. However, community involvement and awareness are equally crucial in creating safer neighborhoods.

Residents are encouraged to report suspicious activities, participate in community policing forums, and take proactive measures to protect themselves and their properties.

Is Your Neighborhood Safe?

If you live in Akasia, Mamelodi East, Temba, or any other high-crime area, staying informed and vigilant is key. By working together, communities and law enforcement can make strides toward reducing crime and improving safety for all.
