Man Arrested for Mpumalanga Mass Tavern Shooting That Left Eight Dead
A 39-year-old man, Bongani Patrick Nkosi, appeared in the Kabokweni Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday in connection with a mass shooting in Pienaar, Mpumalanga, that left eight people dead.
Details of the Tragic Shooting
The shooting occurred early on Saturday morning at around 4 a.m., according to Mpumalanga provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane.
- Fatalities:
- Six people were declared dead at the scene, including five men and one woman.
- Two other victims, a man and a woman, succumbed to their injuries later in the hospital.
- Injuries:
- Three others, two men and one woman, sustained injuries.
- One victim has been discharged from the hospital, while two remain hospitalized.
Two Volkswagen Polos found at the scene had multiple bullet holes. One victim was discovered deceased inside one of the vehicles.
Nkosi was arrested on Sunday night after a swift police operation. Officers recovered a pistol with 13 live rounds of ammunition during the arrest.
“The team has made a breakthrough, and during the suspect’s arrest, police confiscated a pistol with about 13 live ammunition,” said Lieutenant Colonel Ndubane.
The motive for the shooting remains unclear, and police are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Jackie Macie, condemned the tragic event, urging authorities to expedite the investigation:
“We are once more appealing that the police be given space and time to get to the bottom of the shootings. The perpetrators must be urgently arrested.”
Macie also called on liquor traders to ensure the safety of their patrons, extending condolences to the victims’ families and wishing the injured a speedy recovery.
Nkosi’s case has been postponed to January 21, 2025, for a formal bail application.
