The Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA) has completed a major rehabilitation project, upgrading the eastern stormwater channel and revamping Patterson Park in Orange Grove and Norwood.

As part of the Louis Botha Transit-Oriented Development Corridor’s Stormwater Master Plan, the project initially focused on improving drainage systems to reduce flooding. However, at the request of Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo, the revitalization of Patterson Park was also added to the scope.

Patterson Park Gets a Fresh New Look

To ensure the park complemented the stormwater upgrades, JDA brought in landscape architects to oversee improvements, resulting in:

  • Enhanced walkways for easy access

  • Modern playground equipment for families

  • Solar-powered lighting and charging stations to improve safety and sustainability

These upgrades have transformed Patterson Park into a greener, more inviting space for residents to enjoy.

The project also delivered economic benefits, providing opportunities for small businesses and local workers. Five small, medium, and micro enterprises (SMMEs) were contracted, securing a combined package worth R10 million, while 29 local laborers were employed.

JDA CEO Themba Mathibe emphasized the project’s significance in both infrastructure development and community upliftment.

“This initiative strengthens Johannesburg’s resilience by improving stormwater management while also delivering a vibrant, modernized Patterson Park for residents. Our goal is to create spaces that promote inclusivity, connectivity, and long-term sustainability.”

With improved stormwater systems and a revitalized public park, Johannesburg takes another step towards urban renewal and environmental sustainability.
