Parliament Moves Forward with Small Business Ombud Appointment

Published

on

Parliament will begin interviewing candidates on Tuesday for the country’s first small enterprise ombud, a newly established role aimed at addressing disputes affecting small businesses.

The ombud’s office, created under the National Small Enterprise Amendment Act signed into law in 2024, will handle contractual disputes, late payments, and complaints from business owners. The position is expected to provide much-needed recourse for small enterprises struggling against larger corporations. Eight shortlisted candidates will undergo public interviews as part of the selection process.

Committee chairperson Masefako Dikgale highlighted the importance of the ombud, saying, “The ombud will have a direct impact on the lives of small business owners and cooperative members who often write to the committee to complain about ill-treatment by big corporates. It will also have multiplier effects on the inclusive economy and job creation.”

During a recent oversight visit to Limpopo, the committee received complaints from small businesses about inadequate support for growth.

Dikgale pointed out key concerns raised by entrepreneurs, including difficulties accessing markets and credit, as well as the absence of post-investment support and monitoring of assistance programs.

The establishment of the ombud’s office marks a significant step in ensuring fair treatment for small business owners and strengthening their role in the economy.
