Suspected Maggot Infestation Treated at Tshwane Hospital

Published

on

Odi District Hospital in Tshwane treated five individuals over the weekend for suspected myiasis, a condition caused by maggot infestation. Health authorities confirmed that three of the cases were positively diagnosed.

According to Gauteng’s Department of Health, the condition results when flies lay eggs on damp or dirty fabrics such as clothing or bedding. Once the eggs hatch, the maggots burrow into human skin, leading to painful swellings that resemble boils.

Public health concern

Dr William Malebati, Gauteng’s Infection Prevention and Control Manager, explained the condition during an interview with eNCA, highlighting the importance of hygiene and early detection in preventing the spread of myiasis.

The Department’s Public Health Directorate is monitoring the situation and urging communities to prioritise sanitation and proper handling of laundry and bedding to reduce the risk of exposure.

Authorities are continuing to assess the circumstances under which the cases developed, as part of an ongoing infection control initiative in the province.
