NSFAS Investigation Finds No Evidence of Landlord Exploitation Claims

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has concluded its investigation into allegations that landlords were exploiting students but found no evidence to substantiate the claims.
The probe was launched following a Sunday World report published on 16 February 2025, which alleged that landlords were demanding sexual favours from financially vulnerable students who struggled to pay rent, particularly in areas housing Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) college students.
However, NSFAS confirmed on Saturday that the investigation, conducted on 17 February in collaboration with the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) and Thekwini TVET College, found no verifiable proof of the reported incidents.
Investigation Findings
According to NSFAS, the student referenced in the report was not registered at the institution, making it difficult to verify the claims or provide direct support.
Furthermore, despite calls for affected students to come forward and report such cases to the South African Police Service (SAPS), no formal complaints have been lodged.
“Should further credible information come forward, NSFAS will reopen the investigation to ensure appropriate action is taken,” the scheme confirmed.
Students Encouraged to Report Exploitation
While the allegations remain unproven, NSFAS strongly condemned any form of exploitation, harassment, or gender-based violence against students. The scheme assured that any landlords found guilty of misconduct would face blacklisting and termination of their NSFAS accreditation.
Students experiencing similar incidents are encouraged to:
- Report the violation to SAPS and obtain a case number.
- Submit the complaint to NSFAS Speak Up for further intervention.
NSFAS reaffirmed its commitment to student welfare and urged students to report any misconduct to ensure swift and decisive action.
