A 55-year-old Nigerian national was arrested at OR Tambo International Airport on Tuesday, March 4, for allegedly attempting to smuggle drugs into South Africa.

According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), the suspect had just arrived from São Paulo, Brazil, when law enforcement officers intercepted him. A medical x-ray revealed that the suspect had swallowed multiple objects suspected to be bullets containing cocaine.

“The suspect, who is still releasing bullets, is expected to appear before the Kempton Park Magistrates’ Court this week,” the police stated.

This arrest follows a separate incident at the same airport earlier in the year, where two other drug mules were apprehended, and police seized cocaine worth an estimated R7.5 million.
