Motorists using the N3 toll route between KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng are facing major travel disruptions after a crash near Van Reenen’s Pass sparked a fire and brought traffic to a complete standstill.

Crash sets trucks alight and shuts down N3

The collision, involving two trucks, occurred near Van Reenen’s Pass and caused both vehicles to catch fire, forcing a full closure of the highway. The N3 Toll Concession confirmed that the road is now gridlocked between Cedara in KwaZulu-Natal and Heidelberg in Gauteng, with the Tugela toll plaza closed to all northbound traffic.

Emergency services and road incident teams rushed to the scene and are still working to contain the situation and clear the roadway. However, authorities have warned that the road may remain closed for several hours.

Motorists urged to delay travel

Thania Dhoogra, spokesperson for the N3 Toll Concession, advised travellers to stay off the route if they can.

“Motorists are advised to please delay travel to the area if possible and to please remain patient as emergency services are working to restore traffic flow as quickly and safely as possible,” Dhoogra said.

Traffic backlogs are expected to persist well into the day as clean-up operations and safety checks continue. Alternative routes may also experience increased congestion due to diverted vehicles.
