Motorists returning to Gauteng via the N3 are being urged to prepare for significant traffic delays following a collision involving a bus and a truck near Colenso. The crash resulted in multiple casualties and has caused severe congestion on the northbound lanes.

Traffic Update and Safety Advisory

Thania Dhoogra, Chief Operating Officer of the N3 Toll Concession (N3TC), confirmed that recovery efforts are underway but warned that traffic is moving slowly through the Johannesburg-bound fast lane.

“Motorists should anticipate heavy congestion and extensive delays near the crash site. Approach the area with caution,” said Dhoogra.

The situation is further complicated by wet weather conditions along much of the N3 Toll Route. Motorists are advised to:

  • Reduce speed to accommodate slippery roads
  • Maintain safe following distances to prevent further accidents
  • Drive defensively, especially in adverse weather

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has forecast disruptive rainstorms from late Monday afternoon, raising concerns about severe thunderstorms, heavy rain, and hail along the route. Travelers should plan ahead and allow extra time for potential delays.

Dhoogra also noted that traffic volumes are expected to increase as holidaymakers return to Gauteng. To manage safety and congestion, the Roads Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) may implement special traffic control measures, particularly at high-risk areas like Van Reenen Pass.

Key Travel Tips for Motorists

To ensure safe travels, the N3TC advises motorists to:

  • Stay informed of traffic and weather updates
  • Keep vehicle headlights switched on
  • Adhere to traffic warnings and signals
  • Exercise patience and caution during challenging travel conditions

As recovery operations continue near Colenso, motorists are reminded to prioritize safety and adhere to all advisories. With wet weather expected and high traffic volumes anticipated, defensive driving is crucial to ensure a safe return to Gauteng.
