Mr D delivery drivers clash with motorist during funeral procession

A heated altercation between a motorist and a group of Mr D delivery drivers is being linked to an emotional response during a funeral procession.
A video circulating online shows a man and a younger passenger being surrounded and attacked by multiple drivers. The footage captures several individuals taking turns striking the motorists.

The Takealot Group, which owns Mr D, has confirmed it is aware of the incident, which took place on Friday, 21 March.
Based on visible signage in the video, the altercation happened near Wierda Road and Sutherland Ridge in Centurion.
“The incident is concerning, which is why we immediately launched an urgent investigation with the franchisee responsible for the area,” the company said in a statement to The Citizen.
According to the investigation, the confrontation unfolded during a funeral procession for an independent contractor driver who recently passed away after a motorcycle accident.
Takealot alleges that the motorist disrupted the procession, leading to a minor accident that escalated into a physical clash.
Drivers under investigation
The company maintains that some drivers attempted to de-escalate the situation.
Although law enforcement was reportedly present at the procession, no officers appear in the one-minute clip.
Takealot has stressed that Mr D drivers are independent contractors linked to franchisees rather than full-time employees.
“The conduct seen in the video does not align with the policies and procedures we uphold at Mr D,” the company stated.
“While the circumstances were emotional, there is no justification for this kind of behaviour.”
Takealot has engaged with the relevant franchisee and confirmed that disciplinary action will be taken against those involved.
The company acknowledged the complexity of the situation but said further details of the process remain confidential due to contractual agreements.
“We are committed to ensuring that all partners on our platform uphold the highest standards of professionalism and conduct,” Takealot concluded.
