A 45-year-old woman, Sonell Joubert, appeared before the Tonga Magistrate’s Court on Monday, following her arrest for the alleged murder of Jurgens Nel. Joubert, who owns Tswale Educational Elephant Interactions, was taken into custody after Nel’s body was discovered at Lowhills Farm in Mpumalanga earlier this month.

Mpumalanga provincial police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane, confirmed that the tragic incident occurred on Monday last week at a farm in Kamhlushwa, near Komatipoort.

“Reports indicate that the suspect allegedly stabbed and killed Jurgens Nel, 45, at the farm,” Ndubane explained.

When paramedics and police arrived at the scene, Nel was found with multiple stab wounds and was declared dead on-site. Authorities immediately opened a murder investigation.

Preliminary police reports suggest a possible confrontation before the fatal stabbing, although the full details of the incident are still under investigation.

“There may have been a scuffle before the stabbing occurred, but further investigation will clarify the situation,” Ndubane stated.

Following the investigation, Joubert was arrested and appeared in court. The case was postponed to February 18, when she will apply for bail.

In a related development, The Lowvelder reported that Joubert had filed a charge against Nel earlier, accusing him of violating a protection order. She alleged that Nel had assaulted and insulted her. This background could play a role in the ongoing legal proceedings.

Joubert remains in custody as her legal team prepares for her bail application during the next court hearing on February 18. Authorities continue to investigate the case, with further details expected to emerge in the coming weeks.
