After heavy rains last week caused widespread damage and flooding across Mpumalanga, the province has now been issued a new warning for potential flooding. The downpours on Friday, 28 March, led to significant flooding in Middelburg, with several vehicles trapped at low-level bridges.

Tragically, a person drowned at the Klein Olifants River when swept away by strong currents near a flooded low-water bridge on Koppie Street. According to Middelburg Observer, the Middelburg Fire Department was searching for the body along the river by 6 p.m.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a yellow level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms in Mpumalanga and the extreme southern parts of Limpopo. The warning is in effect from Monday noon until midnight, with localised flooding expected in susceptible areas due to heavy rainfall.

“The thunderstorms may cause damage to informal houses or structures due to strong winds and lightning, as well as flooding on roads and bridges,” the SAWS statement read.

Meanwhile, reports circulated about the Kruger Dam wall bursting, but DA ward councillor Johann Dyason clarified that the dam wall remains stable despite the heavy rainfall in the area. He confirmed that there is a crack in the wall, but engineers had previously assessed it and deemed it safe.
