Historic Victory for MK Party in eThekwini as DA’s Ward Falls

Published

on

The uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party has achieved a landmark victory in the eThekwini municipality, flipping a ward that was previously held by the Democratic Alliance (DA). This win, achieved on April 16, marks the MK Party’s first success in a major metropolitan area.

The victory came in Ward 110, which covers parts of Mount Moriah, Dalefarm, Sunningdale, Glen Anil, and Glen Hills. MK Party candidate Mandla Biyela narrowly defeated the DA’s Rowena Bosman by just 22 votes, according to election result analyst Wayne Sussman. MK Party secured 2,435 votes (38.9% of the vote share), edging out the DA with 2,413 votes (38.6%).

This victory is particularly significant for the MK Party, as it marks their first triumph in a DA-controlled ward and extends their success beyond areas previously held by the African National Congress (ANC). MK Party Secretary General Floyd Shivambu proudly announced the win shortly after 3 a.m., noting the tight margin of victory.

The ANC trailed in third place with 966 votes, while the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) garnered a modest 30 votes.

DA Struggles in April By-elections

The victory for the MK Party comes on the heels of another significant blow to the DA, which lost another traditionally held ward in Johannesburg to the Patriotic Alliance earlier in April. Despite this, the DA did manage to hold onto Ward 6 in Randfontein during the same round of by-elections. Martin Brown of the DA won 71% of the vote, comfortably defeating challengers from the ANC, EFF, Freedom Front Plus, and Arise Afrika Arise Independent Congress.

Both the MK Party’s success in eThekwini and the DA’s retention in Randfontein highlight the shifting political dynamics in South African municipalities as the country gears up for the 2026 local government elections.
