Four Suspects to Appear in Court for Murder of Nigerian National in Midrand
Midrand police have arrested four suspects, aged 20 to 28, in connection with the murder of a Nigerian national, Chukwunta Friday Julius.
The suspects are expected to appear before the Alexandra Magistrate Court on Friday following the brutal assault that led to Julius’s death at Tembisa Hospital on Tuesday.
Police Work Leads to Arrests
Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo, police spokesperson, praised the investigation team for their relentless efforts in tracking down the suspects. “Midrand police followed all leads tirelessly, resulting in the successful apprehension of four suspects,” he stated.
The incident occurred at Midrand’s Protea Estate over the weekend. Julius, 37, succumbed to his injuries after the violent attack.
Other Notable Sentencing in High-Profile Cases
In a separate case last month, the Northern Cape High Court sentenced four men involved in the 2021 murder of Egyptian businessman Khalil Lofty Ghazy.
The accused, two Botswana nationals and two South African men, carried out a premeditated robbery outside a Springbok shop. They stole R122,500 before fatally shooting Ghazy.
Colonel Cherelle Ehlers, Northern Cape police spokesperson, confirmed the harsh sentences:
- 25 years for murder,
- 18 years for robbery, and
- 5 years for illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.
Ehlers highlighted that swift action by the South African Police Service led to the arrests. “Stolen money was recovered, and firearms were found in the suspects’ vehicle,” she added.
The accused remained in custody throughout the trial, ensuring justice for Ghazy’s family.
Both cases underscore the importance of police diligence and the judicial system’s role in tackling violent crime. The outcomes serve as a warning and a call for increased community vigilance against crime.
