Mbeki and Kabila Meet to Discuss African Leadership in Johannesburg

In Johannesburg, former South African President Thabo Mbeki recently hosted his counterpart, Joseph Kabila, at the Thabo Mbeki Foundation for a discussion centered on African leadership and development. The meeting comes in the aftermath of failed peace negotiations in Luanda, Angola, intended to address the ongoing crisis in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The M23 rebel group withdrew from the talks, citing the imposition of sanctions on some of its members. This follows the history of the 2002 peace agreement brokered by Mbeki, when Kabila and Rwandan President Paul Kagame signed the pact in Sun City, South Africa, which ultimately failed to be implemented.
