‘DA Is the Common Denominator in Coalition Collapse’ – Mashaba

ActionSA leader Herman Mashaba has once again taken aim at the Democratic Alliance (DA), accusing the party of consistently causing coalition governments to collapse. His remarks, delivered during the State of the Capital Address in Tshwane, reflect a growing political divide as ActionSA aligns itself more closely with the African National Congress (ANC).

Mashaba said recent partnerships that excluded the DA have shown more stability, highlighting ActionSA’s role in the successful governance of Tshwane, where the party currently holds the mayoral position.

“If you look at a common denominator, everywhere coalition collapse is because of the DA. So I think anyone prepared to work with the DA, you must understand that the likelihood of the coalition arrangement collapsing is very high,” IOL quoted Mashaba as saying.

This marks a significant shift from ActionSA’s earlier stance of refusing to work with the ANC. The party is now in coalition with the ANC in all three major Gauteng metros: Johannesburg, Tshwane, and Ekurhuleni.

Last week, Mashaba stated that should ActionSA be invited to join the Government of National Unity (GNU), it would engage in talks with the aim of serving the interests of ordinary South Africans.

ActionSA also supported the ANC during a key national budget vote, signalling a broader realignment in the party’s political strategy.

“We are not going to work with people who are working against our country. People who are prepared to really go to the international world to go and tell them things are bad in this country with misinformation,” Mashaba said during an interview with Newsroom Afrika.

He also criticised the DA’s public attacks on the ANC, questioning how the ruling party could still consider collaborating with them.

“In fact, from the ANC point of view, if you look at the vitriol, the disrespect and the insults that the DA has unleashed against the ANC in the last few days, I cannot understand honestly for the life of me how the president and members of the ANC will accept to work with such a party. It’s beyond me, but it’s up to the ANC, if they want to work with the DA, let them continue.”

ActionSA’s parliamentary leader Athol Trollip echoed this sentiment, suggesting the party might reconsider joining the GNU if the DA withdraws from it.
