Limpopo, South Africa – A 34-year-old scholar transport driver has been arrested for allegedly raping a 5-year-old girl in Mafefe Village, under the Malipsdrift policing precinct near Lebowakgomo.

The Limpopo police confirmed the arrest on Thursday, revealing that the horrific abuse reportedly took place between January and March 2025.

How the Crime Unfolded

According to Police Spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, the suspect allegedly picked up the child from school along with other learners. Instead of taking her home, he is accused of raping her inside the vehicle before dropping her off.

“The suspect reportedly threatened the child to keep silent, but she eventually disclosed the ordeal to her grandmother during the Easter weekend,” Ledwaba said.

rape case was opened and transferred to the Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit for further investigation. The suspect was swiftly arrested and is expected to appear in the Thabamoopo Magistrate’s Court soon.

Police Condemn the Attack

Acting Provincial Commissioner Major General Samuel Manala strongly condemned the incident, calling it “shocking and heartless.”

“We urge parents and guardians to support children when they report abuse so that perpetrators face justice for their horrendous actions,” Manala stated.

Recent Similar Case Highlights Ongoing Crisis

This arrest comes just days after serial rapist Gilbert Sibusiso Fankomo (39) was handed four life sentences by the Mpumalanga High Court for raping multiple teenagers between 2009 and 2022.

Fankomo’s crimes included luring young girls under false pretenses before assaulting them. Despite a previous 18-year sentence for rape, he was released on parole in 2019—only to reoffend.

A Call for Stronger Child Protection Measures

With child sexual abuse cases persisting across South Africa, authorities are urging vigilance and swift reporting to protect vulnerable minors.

The Limpopo police have reassured the public that they are prioritizing child safety and ensuring that offenders face the full might of the law.

What are your thoughts on this case? Should harsher penalties be enforced for child predators?
